Contrasts

Where there is much light, the shadow is deep
Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe (1749-1832) German poet, novelist and dramatist.

Developing on the idea of contrasts existing and co-existing in the work, that I was trying to achieve in the Allusions to Life Series.  I have started an on-going list of possible contrasts.

Allusions to Life 9
Solid / Intangible
Knowable / Unknowable
Depth / Surface
Projecting / Absorbing
Defined / Unclear
Resolved / Unformed
Brutal / Tender
Merciless / Sympathetic
Pitiless / Compassionate
Inertia / Dynamism
Immured / Uncaged
Evanescent / Manifesting
Public / Private
Distortion / Proportion
Reveal / Shield
Custody / Freedom
Vulnerable / Sheltered
Exteriorise / Interiorise
Imagine / Experience

In some cases the opposites are fundamental therefore it is difficult for them to exist in the same place within the work.  It is possible for some contrasts to co-exist by using one to achieve the other, for example a bold composition can be achieved through subtle mark making, or the act of shielding reveals something about the person; but perhaps this is side-stepping the intention.
