2011, the year of the 150th anniversary of the birth
of the Bengali poet and winner of the Nobel Prize for literature, I
thought I would share one of my favourite passages with you.
From Gitanjali (Song Offerings) 1910
He whom I enclose with my
name is weeping in this dungeon.
I
am ever busy building this wall all around; and as this wall goes up into the
sky day by day I lose sight of my true being in its dark shadow.
I
take pride in this great wall, and I plaster it with dust and sand lest a hole
should be left in this name; and for all the care I take I lose sight of my
true being.
There is a display of some of Tagore's painting at the V&A, London. To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), the V&A will hold a display of about 50 of his paintings from the period 1928 to 1939, never before displayed outside India.
Rabindrath Tagore: Poet and Painter on show until 4th March 2012.
